The Tangled Web of Grief: Supporting the Grief of Others and Ourselves

The human experience of grief is always a difficult one, yet additional challenges come with navigating grief in a society that struggles with both emotional expression and mortality. Factors such as direct and indirect exposure to humanitarian crises and living through a pandemic further complicate one’s experience of grief. For direct service providers, the tangled web of grief can also entail navigating one’s own grief while supporting the profound grief of others. Yet while grief is often a heartbreaking and overwhelming experience, at its core it is a healthy one and finding ways to integrate it into one’s life is an important life skill. In this trauma-informed presentation Andrea will unpack common barriers to supporting someone who is grieving, while providing practical strategies that can be used to support a healthy grief process in oneself and others.

Learning Objectives:

Learn about grief literacy
Explore common barriers to supporting people who are grieving
Examine practical strategies for providing grief support
Enhance understanding of how to care for ourselves
Build up your resources

This virtual space is designed to help us connect across the land that we are currently calling Canada. Our members are standing on different parts of this land that many Indigenous peoples have been taking care of for millennia before settlers arrived. We acknowledge the injustices that have been committed in the past and the harms that continue. We are committed to learning, sharing knowledge, and working towards a just future through building respectful relationships between established or recent settlers and the first nations of what we now call Canada.
